These are my early impressions of the JonBenet Ramsey Case. I was in Boulder when JonBenet’s murder happened. I had two sources of information deep inside Boulder Justice who would eventually share with me what they knew about the Case. I played in the Boulder City/County Municipal Employees Golf League for several years. The Summer of 1997, amid all the media controversies happening in Boulder, both Chief Koby and Commander Eller were on the roster; they brought a tension to the usual camaraderie that existed among players.
I mean, they would get angry if asked about the Case. My impression was they were clueless. They were very much about leaving the Investigation to the Detectives. Steve Thomas had them convinced he was solving it because, according to Steve Thomas, the Ramseys Did It; although much of the evidence was unknown the summer 1997.
Koby and Eller did not return to the league the following summer 1998, but according to the players who did and knew about the case, Steve Thomas was still in control, or so ST said. However, there were rumors of him leaking the Ransom Note to Vanity Fair, some began questioning if he was really on the right path to solving the case.
By August, we all know Steve Thomas resigned with a sniping letter to the District Attorney; it was devastating to all; and it became obvious he was actually clueless about who killed JonBenet. Everybody was clueless and the Investigators were gone by the time the Grand Jury was convened. No one, except Lou Smit, investigated anyone other than the Ramseys and he had been robbed of the resources he needed to get the job done.
